Spies from China in the UK have been sentenced 8-10 years after spying on Hong-Kong pro-democracy dissidents on behalf of China. The two spies, one called Bill Yuen, a former senior officer in Hong Kong's police force; the other called Peter Wai.

Peter Wai, aged 38, was entenced to ten years after being found guilty in May for conducting covert operations for Hong Kong and Chinese authorities.

Taking place at the Old Bailey at London, the court case secured the first two people arrested for spying for China under the 2023 National Security Act.

Peter Wai conducted 'Shadow Policing' on Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters under the command of Bill Yuen (who appeared to be his leader in this case).

Peter Wai was a Metropolitan Police officer, who was working at Heathrow Airport as UK border force, was working as a special contable with City of London Police and set up a private security firm.

The job of his leader, hander and ex-Hong Kong superintendent Bill Yuen, was a seior manager at the Hong Kong Economic Trade Office in London. It is from here where he commanded the operation.

The two were targeting dissidents (which they call cockroaches) by running a surveilance and intimidation campaign against them.

Zheng Zeguang, the Chinese ambassador to the UK was summoned by the Foreign office where he was told such activities will always be "Unacceptable".

Along with these two, a former Royal Marine (who was charged for aiding the Hongh Kong intelligence service) was found dead in a park in Maidenhead, Berkshire on the 21st May 2024. Although not confirmed, it is suspected he committed suicide.

This case could be interpreted as troubling, it is the first use of the 2023 National Security Act and therefore, these two spies have been sentenced from 8-10 years in prison.

Italy is similarly under intense pressure as a scorching air mass pushing up from subtropical North Africa sweeps across the peninsula. The Italian Ministry of Health has issued its highest level red heatwave alert for 15 major cities, including the capital city of Rome and the northern financial hub of Milan. Forecasters predict daytime highs will widely reach or surpass 40°C in central and southern locations like Florence, prompting emergency services to brace for a surge in heat stroke admissions. While specific real-time casualty numbers for this week are still being aggregated by local health authorities, Italian public health officials are treating the situation as a severe threat to vulnerable populations, advising tourists and residents alike to stay indoors during peak hours.

In the UK, temperature have also reached a shocking-high, Met Office reported that the heat will increase on Tuesday, with highs of 37°C forecast for southern England and 35°C in southeast Wales. The peak of the heatwave is now forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures are expected to climb to at least 39°C and there remains a chance of this being exceeded in places. Yesterday, the Met Office has issued a Red Extreme Heat Warning for Wednesday and Thursday, in counties, including: 

• London

• West Midlands (including Birmingham)

• East Midlands (including Nottingham)

• South East England (including Reading, Oxford, and Kent)

• South West England (including Salisbury and Somerset)

• East of England (including southern Cambridgeshire)

• Southern Wales (extending as far west as Swansea)

An Amber Heat Warning, where they are still experiencing a dangerous temperature, for: 

• North West England (including Manchester and Liverpool)

• Yorkshire and the Humber (including Leeds and Sheffield)

• North East England (including Newcastle and Sunderland)

• Mid and Northern Wales

And a Yellow Heat Warning is issued for Northern England and parts of Northern Ireland, elderly and children are expected to be affected as well.

By Friday conditions will be less hot, with highs of 32°C forecast across eastern areas.  

Overnight temperatures will also be very high, with widespread Tropical Nights, where the temperature does not drop below 20°C, across parts of England and Wales, especially in urban areas. Humidity is also a factor, making this heatwave even more impactful with heat stress a danger to all.  

It is highly likely that the UK will experience a new broken record for June hottest temperature, previously, the record is kept at 35.6°C but we expect it to be broken by tonight. Wales is also on track to easily break its individual June record of 33.7°C (set in 2000).

In the UK, over 300 schools are closed for Wednesday and Thursday due to the extreme weather forecast. As schools in Birmingham, such as Bishop Vesey's Grammar School, Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls and Arthur Terry School are closed. Special Educational Needs (SENs) schools largely remain open for students but it is not recommend for anyone to travel in the weather.
